SL GOV LAMENTS 51 FISHERMEN IN INDIAN CUSTODY.

RAWAYA - With the 21 Tamil Nadu fishermen held by the Navy here now ready to head home, Sri Lanka today lamented the plight of their 51 fishermen in Andaman island, being detained for the past seven months. The 21 fishermen caught by the Navy two weeks ago are now in the premises of the Indian High Commission in Colombo awaiting a meeting point by Indian authorities to hand them over officially, Deputy Minister of Fisheries Neomal Perera told Asian Tribune. Also he lamented 51 Lankan fishermen being held in Andaman island, that comes under the purview of the Central Government of India. “We released the Indian fishermen on sympathetic grounds,” Minister Neomal said adding: “We want India now to reciprocate our goodwill gesture by releasing the 51 fishermen being held in Andaman islands.”Yet their release does not seem to happen so easily with an ongoing court battle.

And the Indian High Commission in Colombo today responded, saying there have been many instances of the Tamil Nadu Government releasing Lankan fishermen. But this particular issue does not appear to be an “innocent trespass,” Indian High Commission Spokesman Dinkar Asthana told - .“For example, the State Government of Tamil Nadu State has repatriated 43 Sri Lankan fishermen and 15 boats through the Indian Navy over the past one month,” he said.“As regards the Sri Lankan fishermen being held in Andaman, their case does not appear to be that of an innocent trespass. It has become a judicial issue and the decision of the court is awaited,” Asthana explained.

In the midst of Lakan fishermen crossing into Indian waters frequently and vice versa, Asthana noted that “a system has been worked out under which both governments take action independently, to expeditiously process the cases of innocent or inadvertent trespass of their territorial waters by fishermen of the other country and secure their early release, waiving a number of official requirements in the process.”Meanwhile Minister Neomal too said that “our Navi is trying as much as possible to deter Indian fishermen from entering the Lankan territorial waters. Arrest comes as the last option.”Yet in India, the issue of the 21 fishermen had spilled into streets, midst protest campaigns and hunger strikes.Apparently it has also become a centre of subject to play politics.Despite their release, a protest was held in Rameswaram in India by AIADMK supporters on Friday urging the Indian Government to put pressure on Sri Lanka over the frequent arrest of fishermen.

RAWAYA - All Indian Anna Diravida Munnetra Kalagam general secretary J Jayalalithaa today staged a ‘massive protest’ in Rameswaram (Friday) to condemn the Sri Lankan Navy for its ‘atrocities against Tamilnadu fishermen’.In a statement here, she said the DMK government in Tamilnadu and the UPA government at the Centre had miserably failed to safeguard fishermen from Tamilnadu, who were being attacked and detained by the island nation’s navy.‘After an assurance from the State government, fishermen ventured into sea only recently. However, there was no stopping in the atrocities perpetrated by the Lankan Navy. 21 of them have been detained. More than 400 boats have come under attack,’ she said.Stating that the condition of 21 fishermen is not known so far, Jayalalithaa said the entire fishing community is upset due to such ruthless activities by the Lankan Navy.‘But Chief Minister M Karunanidhi is so soft in his stand. He had humbly requested the Centre to act on this issue. The Union government is doing things for name-sake value,’ she said. MGR Mandram secretary D Jayakumar, all other office bearers and massive crowd took part the protest demonstration.
