RAWAYA - The United States is asking the Sri Lankan government to open to foreign inspection areas of the country where government forces are alleged to have shelled displaced Tamils early this year in the final weeks of a decades long secessionist rebellion.Speaking of a new State Department report on the gory finale of the war, spokesman Ian Kelly says it illustrates "some real concerns, obviously," about Sri Lanka's actions as the war wound down. He also said the United States has asked the Sri Lankans privately as well as publicly to investigate, as he said they should under international law.Kelly said the United States wants answers "about how this military operation was conducted. And we also, of course, are calling on the government of Sri Lanka to allow more access to international organizations."Hundreds of thousands of minority Tamil civilians were forced into the camps after fleeing the final months of the war with the separatist Tamil Tiger rebels, which ended in May.The report, posted Thursday on the State Department's Web site, accused both the Sinhalese-dominated government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam of actions that could be described as war crimes. The United States considers the Tigers a terrorist organization. They involved attacks on civilians, violations of cease-fires, use of children as combatants, attacks on hospitals.Specific incidents alleged in the report involve shelling into areas where displaced Tamils had fled on the assurance of the government that they would not be attacked. Instead, it said, attacks were mounted on the civilians and even makeshift hospitals. The Tigers finally ended their rebellion in May. The government-run camps remain, however, and even though 4,300 or more Tamils left government-run camps Thursday, thousands more remain. The Sri Lankan government issued an angry rebuttal to the U.S. report, contending that the period it covered was "when the Security Forces of Sri Lanka were engaged in a humanitarian mission" in the battle area."The allegations against the Government of Sri Lanka in the document ... appear to be unsubstantiated and devoid of corroborative evidence," the Foreign Ministry said in the statement posted on its Web site."There is a track record of vested interests endeavouring to bring the government of Sri Lanka into disrepute, through fabricated allegations and concocted stories.

RAWAYA - Colombo District UNP parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake’s name is being mentioned about receiving funds from US based millionaire Raj Rajaratnam. He was arrested by the US Central Bureau of Investigations on allegations of defrauding the stock market, obtaining confidential information on corporate bodies illegally and also funding the LTTE front organization TRO to siphon off funds for the terrorist group before it was defeated in May.Karunanayake and two others were indicted in the High Court of Colombo in connection with the transfer of US $ 3 million from USA to a bank account in Colombo violating the Exchange Control Act.The trial had been fixed for hearing on February 2, 2010, by High Court Judge Deepali Wijesundara. International news networks including CNN said the hedging business conglomerate that Rajaratnam operated in the US had made access to confidential information of certain private sector companies and had made profits after studying the weaknesses of some of them. Rajaratnam was alleged to have provided US$ 3.5 million to the LTTE front. In 2007 Rajaratnam’s name arose in connection with an inquiry into fund raising for the LTTE, which was defeated in May after a quarter century of violence.“The defendants operated a cozy world of ‘You scratch my back, I scratch your back’ the United States attorney for Southern District of New York Preet Bharara said on Friday (16). He added that the case should be a wake up call for hedge fund managers who even think about insider trading.“In 2005 and 2006 the charity he created Tsunami Relief gave US $ 1.5 million to the Tamil Rehabilitation Organization, a group officially dedicated to helping victims of the fighting. But prosecutors have since charged the Tamil charity with aiding the rebel group and its non profit status has been suspended,” CNN news service said yesterday.

RAWAYA - Indian Actor politician Vijayakant today said the visit of the 10 member MPs delegation from Tamil Nadu to Sri Lanka to study the conditions of internally displaced Tamils was a 'Holiday trip' and had in no way benefitted Tamils in the island nation."The Holiday trip of the MPs delegation has done no good for the Sri Lankan Tamils. On the other hand, it has only benefitted Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse, who managed to win over the Indian MPs," the DMDK founder said in a statement here.Tamils who met the delegation at different venues including Jaffna Tamil University, posed some "uncomfortable questions" to them, he claimed. He demanded to now the need for such a "fact-finding team" at this point of time and wondered whether the Indian Embassy in Colombo "was hiding facts" all these days.Even the External Affairs Ministry had not made any statement in this regard, he said.On the request by certain political parties to the Centre, requesting its intervention in ensuring the welfare of Sri Lankan Tamils, he said they were not bothered about "the life and death situation" of lakhs of Tamils lodged in camps in the island nation."If Tamils are suffering so badly, what is the need for good bilateral relations," he asked.

RAWAYA - UNP M.P. Lashman Kiriella speaking to the media today (15) at the media unit said , everyone has heard of a businessman robbing Peter to pay Paul. But , we are now witnessing a Govt. which has gone even beyond a bad businessman – it is robbing Peter , Paul and all the people of the country to maintain its largest cabinet Cabinet of Minsiters in the world of 113 Ministers , and to repay the interest installments and the colossal debts it has plunged the country into due to its abysmal fiscal mismanagement. The Govt. is totally bankrupt is clearly revealed in the latest report of the Central bank. It has stated that the annual payment of interest together with the debt installments exceed the annual revenue even after massive collection of taxes , tariffs etc. from the people . Now , the Govt. is up against a blank wall because it has burdened the people so much so that it cannot heap further burdens, he added. In this dire economic climate , can the Govt. do any development work or give samurdhi recipients their relief ?, he asked. It is now in a deep quandary as to how it could increase its revenue. Indeed , when it took the loan from the IMF in its desperation , it had promised to increase its income in the next budget , or reduce its expenditure by 7% . It is now unable to honor this promise. This is why it has dispensed with the budget this year , and is introducing a vote of account. The Govt. is using this also as a ploy to avoid giving relief to the people if a budget is announced.Though the Govt. by its monumental fiscal mismanagement it has made the country bankrupt , it never runs short of giving false promises and practicing deceitful activities on the people. It has become the practice of all govt. candidates to issue job application forms promising jobs to voters before every PC election. After the elections , these completed application forms have been found and picked up from the garbage heaps. Will you believe that the highest percentage of taxes, 65 % of the earnings is paid by our businessmen in the whole of Asia ? In other countries ,it is only 30 to 35 %. Similarly , the people too are heavily taxed,. they are paying 35 % taxes on the goods they are purchasing , he concluded.
