RAWAYA -  "I went abroad to find a country for Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse to flee after he is defeated at the presidential election but out of the six countries he visited none was prepared to accept him" said Leader of the JVP Somawansa Amarasinghe. He said this answering a question by a journalist at KIA when he returned after being abroad to participate in commemoration ceremonies of ‘November Heroes’ held in several countries.  As soon as Mr. Amarasinghe came out of BIA, journalists surrounded him and asked whether he went abroad after having differences with the JVP as claimed by the media controlled by the state. Answering this question the Leader of the JVP, said with a chuckle, “Of course not. I went to see whether there was any country that Mahinda Rajapakse could go after being defeated. I went to six countries; none of them was prepared to accept him.

In a more serious note Mr. Amarasinghe said he went abroad to meet Sri Lankans in Italy, France, Britain, Sweden, Germany and Denmark and have discussions with several leaders of those countries and to participate in commemoration ceremonies of ‘November Heroes’ organized by the foreign committees of the JVP in those countries.  Speaking further Mr. Amarasinghe said, “We would make a big change in this country. The corrupt, immoral, anti-democratic and unjustifiable Rajapakse administration should be driven away. More than 25000 soldiers sacrificed their lives to defeat tiger terrorism. Many more were maimed for life. Rajapakse who is unable to make this victory meaningful but plunders it need not be in power anymore. Now the struggle is between Rajapakse who talked about the war and Fonseka who actually did the war.”

Mr. Amarasinghe said as soon as Gen. Sarath Fonseka wins the presidential election the country would receive the GSP tax relief. He said he had discussions with the leaders of the European countries that he visited regarding the GSP+ tax relief and said, “We asked them to consider the situation in the country to offer the GSP+ tax relief. According to them it’s the President and the government that have rejected eh GSP+. The leaders in those countries said they were prepared to give the relief if the government withdrew the undiplomatic accusations it had made against those countries.  However, we know that the present administration does not have the refinement or tactfulness to do so. Hence, we said there will be a change in the country, democracy would be established and asked them whether they were prepared to release the GSP+ relief to us. They assured that they would.”

RAWAYA - The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) charged that the government is engaged in a psychological war by spreading false rumors about the party. JVP MP Vijitha Herath says that there is absolutely no division within the party with regards to its support for General Sarath Fonseka’s candidature in the upcoming Presidential Election as claimed by the state.Speaking to Daily Midia  Mr. Herath said that the rumors and media reports of a struggle between party seniors were ‘completely false’ and the government was engaged in ‘psychological warfare’ in order to undermine the JVP’s support for General Fonseka at the upcoming election.

‘By spreading rumors of this sort to the media the government must be hoping to scare us off  and impede our work for the elections’ the JVP MP said reiterating that ‘ the decision to support General Fonseka’s candidature at the Presidential Election was arrived at unanimously. The JVP MP also denied that party leader Somawansa Amarasingha had left the country as a result of the alleged split. He said that Amarasingha had departed instead to liaise with party members from the United Kingdom, Sweden, Denmark and Belgium.

Recently a  group of supporters United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA)  attacked a group of activists of (JVP) when they were putting up posters in connection with the rally supporting the opposition common presidential candidate General Sarath Fonseka in Maradana in Colombo, according to a press release by the JVP.The attackers had also threatened the JVP supporters and warned them that they would be killed if they continue to do so, JVP said in its press release.

Government probe on KP's assets.

RAWAYA - Defence Spokesperson Keheliya Rambukwella disclosed at a news conference here on Tuesday that the government has sought the advice of the Attorney General’s office to take up the subject of possible freeze of nearly 600 bank accounts belonging to Kumaran Pathmanathan (KP), LTTE chief Velupillai’s successor, currently in the custody of the authorities here.Asked about the estimated value of money in these accounts, the Minister said the government was still in the process of making an assessment. “Getting information about bank account details of individuals and groups from some of the countries is not easy. There are secrecy laws and clauses involved. At the moment, we have no idea of the amount stashed away in these accounts."

For instance, on October 24, the Sri Lankan Defence Ministry had said the LTTE’s arms procurer and Prabakaran’s successor had revealed during interrogation that Sri Lanka-born U.S. business tycoon Raja Rajaratnam had been a leading contributor of money to the LTTE. Mr. Rajaratnam (52) was among six persons arrested on October 17 on charges of securities fraud and conspiracy to commit securities fraud.KP was a key LTTE functionary during the Prabakaran era and was believed to one of the chief fund raisers as well as arms procurer for the LTTE. It is against this backdrop that the disclosure of 600 odd foreign bank accounts of KP acquires significance.

Meanwhile Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe revealed  speaking at a seminar organized by the ‘ Nidahase Wedikawa’ held in Matara and challenged the Govt. to reveal the true position without putting those assets too under the ‘Rajapakse Bros. and Co.’ assets column. He demanded that all details be disclosed in parliament as the country is entitled to the information.
